irCARE

irCARETM for the first time enables dominant carbon fractions in petroleum products to be quickly identified using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) instead of gas chromatography (GC). No previous research had been undertaken on related applications; studies had only used infrared spectroscopy to measure total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in soil samples. Conventional methods for sample analysis (e.g., petroleum hydrocarbon [PH] fraction analysis) are highly labour intensive, time-consuming, and require a high level of expertise. In addition, these ex-situ approaches only include a snapshot in time. Thus, measuring representative temporal variation in PH levels with these methods necessitates sampling at regular intervals.

Introducing irCARE™: A Game-Changer in Hydrocarbon Analysis Using FTIR

In a world where environmental risks from petroleum contamination demand faster, smarter, and more accessible tools, a breakthrough technology is here to change the game — irCARE™. Developed and patented by the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE), irCARE™ is the world’s first system that enables rapid, field-based identification of dominant carbon fractions in petroleum hydrocarbons using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) — eliminating the need for traditional, complex gas chromatography (GC).  ..
